New Work Added February 2016 - Wagner's Prelude (abridged) und Liebestod

Grieg Sonata in F major Op.8 for flute and piano

Originally for violin and piano, this sonata works quite well for flute with minor changes. In true romantic form, there are many opportunities for rubato, experimenting with tone colours and dynamics to create meaningful performances of this work. Duration is approximately 20 minutes depending on whether or not the performers take the repeats.  Video of a performance of this piece coming soon.

Mahler Adagietto from Symphony 5 for flute and piano

An orchestral work that has long been a favourite of mine. Since the flute doesn't get to play any part of it in the orchestra I decided to transcribe it so that I could at long last play this beautiful and heartfelt work that truly speaks to me. It is a favourite with audiences and performers alike as it explores some of the deeper side of the flute. Duration is approximately 10 mintues. Video of a performance of this piece coming soon.

Sibelius Valse Triste from Kuolema Op.40 for flute and piano

Another orchestral work with great sentiment. This short piece is a perfect showcase of a mood we flutist don't often get to present, and an interpretation with great care to preserve this mood can be very effective. Duration is approximately 6 minutes. Video of a performance of this piece coming soon.

NEW!

Wagner Prelude (abridged) and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde for flute and piano

One of my favourite works, this piece is full of gravitas and drama. The abridged Prelude features solo piano and gives the flutist the opportunity and challenge to be on stage not playing for approximately 4 minutes. This is the time in which he/she can create the character and mood with stage presence. Of course one may start the Prelude part way in or exclude it altogether and simply start at the Liebestod. For maximum effect, I prefer to play this on the slower side of things. The German text is included to help the performers keep track of where they are in the story.
